Traditionally when someone wants to print a page from their computer they turn to their regular desktop printer. It creates a standard 8 1/2 x 11 inch document and uses raster graphics. Raster graphics are pixel based images where a certain dot of an image is a certain color. Medium and Large format images are different. They are printed on a plotter because of its ability to enlarge images to any size, limited only by the width of the printing surface of the machine. Even then, images can be mounted together to produce large beautiful murals.
Plotters use vector graphics that instead of having a pixel designate a certain color to a certain spot, a vector defines an A to B path to be a particular color. That allows a plotter to scale an image based on the size desired, creating a print that can be as clear whether it is large or small.
There are lots of applications for such printing. Prints for engineering purposes are one common area where it is helpful to have a large scale draft when creating something. For example when building a house, there are lots of small details that can only show up on a large drawing. Wall art is another facet where it is important to have a high quality image without compromising quality. In fact images are all around us, they convey messages, help with construction, or simply paint our landscape for inspiration or just to simply sit back and enjoy. Its good to start with a high quality image that can show all the small details that make up the big picture.
